Ross's Journal

September 2008

I just returned from a sketching trip to the Interior of British Columbia with a sketchbook full of material. This will be the basis of my work for the next little while. I explored the area from Spences Bridge to Princeton. It is higher in elevation and much drier than the coast mountians. It is an eye-opener to see the number of pines falling prey to the Mountain Pine Beetle. The dead trees turn a rusty red and are visible for miles, sometimes in large swaths on the hills. Up close you can observe the holes in the bark and the pitch tubes where the insects emerge. I saw many very large Ponderosa Pines affected, as well as The smaller Lodgepole Pines. But many large trees remain healthy, which is a hopeful sign. We need a few hard winters to curb the infestation. At night in the tent I could hear coyotes howling in the surrounding woods.

July - 2008

I had an exhibit of my work at the Canvas Gallery in Vancouver. It was curated by Miriam Aroeste of the Vancouver Art Gallery. We had an exciting opening night; it was well attended and a great success. A large selection of my paintings are available now at the Vancouver Art Gallery for sale or rental. You can contact Miriam Aroeste at 604 682 6190 for more information on this.
